Kanakakunnu Palace

Kanakakunnu Palace is on of the major landmarks of Thiruvananthapuram situated atop a hill surrounded by sprawling meadows. It is situated at Vellayambalam near the Napier Museum . The Kanakakunnu Palace was constructed during the time of the Travancore King, His Highness Sree Moolam Tirunal (1885-19240). It was here that the royal family entertained their guests and held banquets. Even tennis courts were constructed in the premises by Hiss Highness Sree Chithira Tirunal. The interiors are decorated with large crystal chandeliers and exquisite pieces of royal furniture and indicate the ultimate of royalty. Today the palace is a heritage monument and belongs to the tourism wing of the state government. It is the venue for cultural meets and programmes. The serene palace grounds are an ideal location for a family to spend an evening. The Nisagandhi open-air auditorium, within the Kanakakunnu Palace compound, is the venue of dance festivals and other cultural shows. The Sooryakanthi auditorium here is a popular venue for exhibitions and trade fairs. The international food festival is also held at the Kanakakunnu Palace grounds.
