Poovar Beach

Poovar, an attractive island destination

Poovar is a tiny coastal hamlet lying on the southern tip of Thiruvananthapuram district near the Kerala - Tamilnadu border. This village is noted for its quiet, clean and attractive beach in the vicinity of which are located some good tourist resorts. Visitors to the capital city are drawn towards this cosy and serene destination which remains an ideal spot for a weekend getaway with family or friends. Accommodation includes floating cottages with facilities for fishing, cruising in the backwaters, ayurvedic spa treatment or simply sun bathing in the sands.

Poovar lies very close to Vizhinjam, a natural harbor. It has an estuary which connects with the sea during high tides. The 56 km Neyyar River passes through Neyyattinkara taluk into the Arabian Sea near Poovar.

Poovar was once a trading centre of timber, sandalwood, ivory and spices. It is believed that the trading ships of King Solomon landed in a port called Ophir, which is figured out as Poovar. Poovar has been one of the ancient Muslim settlements along the western coast of India. The Central Mosque here is said to have been built by Malik ibn Dinar and his missionary team, more than 1,400 years ago.

The nearest railway station is Trivandrum Central and the nearest airport, Trivandrum International Airport, both located at a distance of about 20 km from Poovar.
