Vandiperiyar: Chief minister Oomen Chandy had written a letter to Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa wanting to reduce the water level of Mullaperiyar dam to 120 feet. He told mediapersons in Thiruvananthapuram that TN people have started realising the gravity of the Mullaperiyar issue.
A change has been seen emotional to the issue. The people of Tamil Nadu have understood the need of a new dam genuinely. Chandy added that TN will stand by Kerala in reducing the water level to 120 feet.
The water level at the Mullaperiyar dam touched 136.6 feet with the continuous rains in catchment areas. Inorder to reduce the water level and allay fears of safety among the people, the level at the Idukki dam has been raised.
Though there were intermittent rains on Wednesday, the water level was at 136.4 feet and with heavy rains in the catchment areas the water level rose..
