If the dam breaks, the areas that will be affected, the water entering the districts, time for emergency moves, how to deal with the exigency have to be dealt with in the study. The govt has directed submission of the report by one and half months and would pay a fee of Rs 30 lakhs. Earlier, Rourkee IIT had conducted a study on the effects of the earth quake on the Mullaperiyar dam.
As there are legal implications to the Mullaperiyar issue, the govt aims to submit the new report too to the SC-appointed team. The state is also concerned on the safety of people, Chandy reiterated. He was speaking at Kollam on Tuesday and hopes that Tamil Nadu will oblige to the request to build a new dam.
