TBGRI’s open house for public


HIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute(TBGRI), Palode, here will organise an open house for the public in its campus from December 6 to 10.  The open house will provide the public an opportunity to know the research activities at the institute.
The botanic garden will remain open for the public during these days. The garden is one of the largest conservatory gardens in Asia with over 50,000 plants belonging to 3,500 species. Speaker G Karthikeyan will officially rename the institute as Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanical Garden at the inaugural function.
Addressing mediapersons here on Saturday, director of the institute P G Latha said that the aim of the initiative was to create awareness among the public on the institute’s activities.
Visitors can also buy a variety of plant species ranging from flower plants, including rare orchids, to tissue culture plantains at subsidised rates.   “Around 15 stalls featuring all aspects of plant research will be set up at the open house. All schools and colleges in the southern districts have been invited to make use of the opportunity,” Latha said.   The formal inauguration of the programme will be held on December 7. Speaker G Karthikeyan will inaugurate the programme at 3 p.m.  A Sampath MP and Koliyakode Krishnan Nair MLA will be the guest of honours. NABARD chief general manager K C Shashidhar will deliver the key-note address.
